As you know, here at WAH we love affordable things that give you a healthier home.
Today, we’re talking about water – more specifically – how we can put healthier water in our bodies without spending a fortune.
Water is what keeps us alive. Often if you’re feeling unwell or tired, the first line of advice is drink more water.
But how do we know the water we’re putting into our bodies is good for us? Tap water in most places is treated, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Impurities always get through the cracks, and then you’ve got your pipes, reservoirs and the taps within your own house to worry about. Are they clean? Do you know exactly what’s getting into your water?
There are a lot of fancy ways to purify your water these days, but if you’re looking for something that won’t break the bank my recommendation is a “filter jug”. These jugs purify your water by using filters made from various metals that catch impurities as you pour your water through them. They’re great because the filter is attached to the lip and you simply pour water as you would out of any ordinary jug. The water that comes out, however, is far purer than what you get from the tap.
When I bought my first water filter jug, I actually didn’t warm up to it too much. It was taking up space in my fridge, and it was a task trying to remember to fill it up every day. But then I started to fall in love with it. One day, I actually spat my tap water out as soon as it touched my lips, just out of reflex. Once you’ve become accustomed to the taste of clean and filtered water, the taste difference is very noticeable. I even purchased a filter water bottle afterwards so I could have filtered water on the go as well. I think it will be a long time before I go back to unflitered water.
But here’s another great thing about it – it’s not expensive.
I’ve had two water jugs and the last one barely cost me thirty bucks. For something that you literally consume liters of every single day, it is such a small and worthwhile investment in your health.
So where do you get one? I bought mine off Amazon – they’ve got a great selection – and it arrived the next day. If you’re looking for a jug that looks slick, is affordable, and delivers delicious and pure water, here are the top three I’d recommend:
This is the jug I’m currently using and I love it. It uses filters which not only purify your water but also mineralize it with magnesium, which is heavily deficient in many diets. I love the water flavor and the jug also looks nice and slick too. Like I said earlier, using a jug like this is so much more cost efficient than installing a water purifier in your home, which requires a lot more maintenance and cost.
As for the filters themselves you do need to replace them regularly. BWT recommends every 4 weeks, but I replace mine about every 8-10 weeks as the water doesn’t really start tasting different until then. It’s super easy anyway and you can order fresh filters right off Amazon and have them delivered to your door.
This is probably the most popular water purifier jug on Amazon. It’s completely BPA free with a 10 cup capacity and a nice minimalist design. It also has a sticker indicator on the jug so you know when to change the filter. Brita recommends changing it every 2 months, but in my experience these are quite prudent estimates and you can usually get a few more weeks out the filter, depending on how much water you drink. I’ve never used this water jug personally, but 5,000 Amazon reviews can’t be wrong! Great value too at less than thirty bucks.
If I need to replace my water purifier, this is the one I’m getting! The Claro Pitcher uses an alkaline water filter to put out pure, alkaline drinking water while adding healthy trace minerals to every glass. I love the funky design and color and the big family size jug. It’s a few dollars more expensive than the other jugs on this list, but the more advanced filter seems to be worth the extra change. Definitely a cool and healthy addition to any kitchen!
