Spotted at a recent party: quail eggs, coloured with curry powder

I am not dead. Nothing like it. I just decided to stretch out my not-blogging a bit, and then I soon got out of the rhythm. It’s so easy! And then my comments got taken over by spam, as so many of you pointed out with concern. It took me nearly two hours to delete it all. I wasn’t exactly looking forward to the task.

I’ve been filling my time with other pursuits, mostly making stuff.

I’m currently knitting this little number from 1973, in periwinkle-blue alpaca yarn. I want the matching hat, too — I hope there’s enough yarn left. I’m going to make a different neckline, though. Maybe a keyhole opening with a small silver buckle to fasten the top, but I haven’t found the perfect buckle yet. I can smell a Camberwell Market trip in my future.

I was an envelope robot for a few weeks, but I had to take a break from that, too, so it didn’t stop being fun. Because it’s depressing if you spend all your free time making stuff for people you don’t know that is not earning you nearly one tenth what it’s worth in terms of time and effort. Each trip to the shop in which they’re sold is a bit like giving birth. I made some good accompanying notecards, too, with “You had me at G’day” and “Pluto is too a planet” among my favourites. Then the shop owner told me the customers don’t even care what’s printed on them.

I found out the envelopes are going to be in a magazine (!). I thought it would be the current issue, but it’s not, and the next one doesn’t come out for another month or so, so I’m on envelope vacation.

I also made this:

Geronimo the gay cat. You can’t see the big pink heart I embroidered on his bum. Which is why I was so surprised the owner’s mum chose a male name. Hence his title.

…and Geronimo with his owner. The pattern is Kate by Jess Hutchison. I added a rattle inside the stuffing, made of popcorn kernels. It sounds awesome.

Other things of note:

  • I was attacked by magpies. Two of them, within 10 minutes of each other. The second one drew blood from the side of my head. Boo.
  • I saw INXS. They were good. They definitely picked the right guy to take over, although JD’s nowhere near as sexy as Michael. He’s got some crazy Joe Cocker-type dance moves/twitches, and the “rapping” bit was, um, weird. I had a really fun time, though.
  • I got a haircut. It’s not my favourite, and now that I’ve started the hacking process I just want to cut it all off and start over. People keep telling me not to, but people have been telling me not to since high school. Stupid people.
  • I’m trying to plan for my trip to the States over Christmas. It’s a bit of a sore subject right now, so I’m trying to make the best of it. By being in denial, of course, and procrastinating on booking the ticket. I’m sure my therapist would have a field day with this, if she only knew.

When my marriage fell apart, I felt like the first person in the world to blog about it. Now, thanks to the lovely girlprinter, I’ve discovered many more - shanntastic being a particularly good example. It’s the strangest sense of deja vu I’ve ever experienced. And I just want to hold their hands and say, “I forgot my wedding anniversary last week*, and eventually you will too!”

    * I didn’t forget completely. I looked at the calendar late in the day and thought, hmmm, why do I know this date? Then after awhile I remembered, thought to myself, “eh”, shrugged my shoulders and proceeded to the next stop in my train of thought, something like “mmmm… donut”. Yay me.
